Giants sign Phelps, Lose Vizquel

With the dead time between the end of the world series and the beginning of the off season among us, rumors of all kinds are starting to be thrown out. The Giants did make an actual move Monday, signing Travis Phelps to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. They also officially parted ways with Omar Vizquel as the the veteran shortstop filed for free agency and is not expected to resign with the team. The Vizquel move is not surprising as nobody expected him to be back with the club next year, now it should be interesting to see if he can find a starting job somewhere. The Phelps signing is a low-risk move that could end up giving the Giants a back-up first basemen, or just another player to be dumped during the spring. Phelps hasn't really done much since his early seasons in Toronto, but he just turned 30 years old so he is not completely washed up yet. The Giants already have Pablo Sandoval, Travis Ishikawa and Jon Bowker all ahead of Phelps on the depth chart right now so I wouldn't look for him to make much noise unless one or two of those guys ahead of him get hurt.

There have also been some articles put out in the chronicle recently talking about the possibility of the Giants pursuing Mark Teixeira. First off, with Zito and Aaron Rowand in the middle of fat contracts, I doubt the Giants will give out another one so soon, especially because the last 2 haven't gone so great thus far. The Giants do probably have the available funds to make take a legit run at Teixiera, but they have holes in this team beyond first base. As a matter of fact, with Sandoval and Ishikawa's emergence, first base looks to be a spot possibly filled with in house talent. Now, not saying I would take Sandoval over Teixiera, but all things considered, Teixiera won't make them a playoff team, and tying a majority of the payroll up in him Rowand and Zito over the next 1/2 decade doesn't sound like the best plan in the world. If this were the 2000-2002 Giants when he could have solidified a lineup and pushed them over the top, then it would make some sense, but not so much with this squad.

Vizquel was a good Giant.

I would love to have Teixeira.

Phelps is washed up and has been for years. Texerira would be nice but the Giants aren't going to be a winning team by just adding texera and if they did that it would tie them up for too long. Adam Dunn would be nice though and would be cheaper than Texera, he's not as good but he could hit cleanup and hit 40 home runs. Why is everyone forgetting about Dunn?

Yeah, nobody's saying Teixera wouldn't be a nice add, it's just that this team needs a lot more than that. Not too mention, this team has a few options on on their way at first. Not as proven or likely going to be as good as Tex, but the team is hoping Angel Vilalona is maybe 2-3 years away and if that were the case, he would be knocking on the door right in the middle of a potential Texiera contract.

WORLD SERIES: Giants Move Up 2-0 on Texas

PreGame After taking game one in a surprising slug-fest , the Giants look to go up 2-0 on the Rangers in the World Series on Thursday night. The Giants are sending out Matt Cain, a guy who I'm sure every Giants' fan is pretty confident in. He'll be a opposed by C.J. Wilson, who's in his first year as a full-time starter, but has been brilliant in the role. He did struggle his last time out though, so hopefully the Giants can get to him early and get into his head a bit. I'm going to do something I've never done here on this unique occasion, and sort of do an in-game post. updating this post every time I feel I have something to add. So go Giants, and be sure to check back throughout the game, and after, to vent or whatever! As long as Matt Cain keeps rolling, and the Giants keep coming up with those clutch 2-out hits, we should be OK. Texas has that high-powered offense that can score in a hurry, as we saw last night, so the Giants cannot let down and have to t

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. He wasn't able to stay on the field full time to help this club with their run at the NL Wild Card, and even when he was in there, he didn't seem to make much of an impact in th e lineup. Now, I wasn't necessarily hoping the Giants would cut ties with Sanchez (they probably would have had to pay 4 million or so to buy him out), just didn't think he was worth upwards of 10 million dollars, and would have liked to see the Giants pursue someone like Orlando Hudson with that money. The Giants already have an infielder who's being paid about 3-4 times what his play over the last 2 seasons would indi

Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get
