Potential September Call-Ups

We're just a few days away from the calendar turning to September, at which time MLB rosters can expand to 40 instead of 25. Here are a look at a few guys the Giants could bring up to the big league team in the next week or so.

Xavier Nady, OF: The Giants picked up the right-handed hitting outfielder with September firmly in their minds. Nady got off to a bit of a slow start in Fresno, but has come on strong of late. He blasted two home runs in Sunday's game to help the Grizzlies over the Reno Aces, and has 6 homers and 17 RBI in 21 games. I was a little surprised when the Giants went with Francisco Peguero over Nady last week when Justin Christian went down, but it won't be long before Nady's in a Giants uniform. The Giants still have a couple of days left before the waiver deadline, but if they don't get anyone, Nady could become a key cog for them down the stretch. It wouldn't surprise me if he's platooning with Blanco in left by the time LA comes to town on September 9th.

Guillermo Mota, RHP: The toughest decision the Giants face could be with Mota. Ideally, they'd love it if they could slide him into their bullpen knowing that he'd be the same sturdy arm he's been for them the last few seasons. However, after his 100-game suspension, and rocky start to his rehab assignment, they may not want to take the risk. I think the only thing they'll take into account in regards to the suspension is the missed time, not the fact he was out for use of PEDs (which has been a huge thorn in the side of this team this season). If the Giants think he can contribute, he'll be up.

Mitch Lively, RHP: The 26 year-old Lively has been one of the Grizzlies most consistent relief arms of late, and for a team desperately needing relief help, he should get a shot in SF. He's really turned up his performance lately too, sporting a 2.33 ERA in 19 innings over his last 10 appearances. During those 19 innings, he's struck out 20, walked just 5 and has allowed just 14 hits. Lively also had a 2.14 ERA in 2011 split between A and AA ball so he's shown his capabilities.

Heath Hembree, RHP: Now, this one is a little more delicate. The Giants may not want to expend Hembree any more in 2012 after the young flame thrower battled an arm injury earlier in the season. He hasn't been especially crisp since coming back from it either, but he has thrown decently in August. If he did get the nod, it wouldn't be as a late reliever with the big club, probably more of a mop up duty in low pressure situations. My guess, though, is they hold off on calling up their prized 23 year-old 'closer-of-the-future' this season.

Yusmiero Petit, RHP: The Giants tried it out with Eric Hacker, and it didn't work, but Petit may have a better shot at making the transition from minor league starter to big league reliever. After all, he's done it many of times throughout his career and has been pitching pretty well for Fresno lately. He's given up 3 earned runs or less in 7 of his last 10 starts, and likely makes a better relief candidate than Hacker because of his ability to strike guys out (143 in 159 IP). He'd also give the Giants a security blanket in case they need an emergency start down the stretch.

Dan Runzler, LHP: Runzler has been an enigma the last few years. He's got one of the livest arms in the system and can bring the heat, but his control has baffled him this season. His ERA is up in the 6's for the Grizzlies and the last thing Bochy needs is a reliever who can't throw strikes, but when he's on, he can still be dominant. If he is called up, I wouldn't look for him to be used in any close situation.

Connor Gillaspie and Nick Noonan, IF's: Most Giants fans are familiar with both these guys, as both have been in the system for a while and each are having solid years in Fresno. Gillaspie has a .287 average with 14 homers and 49 RBI. Noonan is hitting .303 with 61 RBI (.333 last 10 games). These are the most likely young hitters to get a look, due to their experience.

Of course, the players on the DL, namely Aubrey Huff, Justin Christian, Shane Loux and Brad Penny will also be activated if and when they become available. Obviously the Giants main goal will be to get quality pitchers and bats who can contribute off the bench. Then there are a couple guys who were called up earlier in the season and should get the all again like Dan Otero. Overall, not a largely inspiring list. A couple of vets on their last leg, and some young guys who've gotten a cup of coffee and not done a whole lot. Fortunately though, the Giants are in the hunt for October, and can't afford to waste roster spots on young prospects on an evaluation basis. They need to use this roster expansion intelligently, as it could determine whether or not they make the postseason.

I say bring up Nady now if he's hitting in AAA.

They should trade for Scott Hariston since they claimed him off waivers. I hate when teams do that just to block another team.

They can't get Hairston. He was blocked by another team then pulled back by the Mets. Would have been a solid addition for sure, and I bet the Giants would have got something done if they could have.

Outside of maybe Nady and Mota, the rest of these names should really not be upcoming, since the young players will never get a shot by Bochy unless it is in a blowout loss or win, and the retreads like Petit, Runzler, Huff, Christian would just be like reliving past nightmares. The Giants need to bring up players who can help win games now to stay ahead of LA, and I agree, they do not have time to watch Noonan, Gillaspie, Lively, and Hembree in a tight playoff race.

Well, they will expand the rosters in September, and they are going to bring players up. Unfortunately they don't have many ideal options.

Most call-ups are only used in lopsided situations anyway, especially for a team in the hunt.

Nady is the one guy I could see given an opp. to make an impact. Mota is also already on his way back to the Giants so he'll be thrown into the mix as well.

Why did htey call up Mota?? I thought they were trying to get rid of the steroid cloud.

Wait, why won't the Giants use Lively or Hembree? They use fricken Erick Hacker and Shane Loux who suck the fat one. And Hensley sucks to. Giants bullpen is falling apart! Why not try some new guys?
I know that it isn't a inspiring list but at least they try to bring great name to the bench.

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. He wasn't able to stay on the field full time to help this club with their run at the NL Wild Card, and even when he was in there, he didn't seem to make much of an impact in th e lineup. Now, I wasn't necessarily hoping the Giants would cut ties with Sanchez (they probably would have had to pay 4 million or so to buy him out), just didn't think he was worth upwards of 10 million dollars, and would have liked to see the Giants pursue someone like Orlando Hudson with that money. The Giants already have an infielder who's being paid about 3-4 times what his play over the last 2 seasons would indi...

WORLD SERIES: Giants Move Up 2-0 on Texas

PreGame After taking game one in a surprising slug-fest , the Giants look to go up 2-0 on the Rangers in the World Series on Thursday night. The Giants are sending out Matt Cain, a guy who I'm sure every Giants' fan is pretty confident in. He'll be a opposed by C.J. Wilson, who's in his first year as a full-time starter, but has been brilliant in the role. He did struggle his last time out though, so hopefully the Giants can get to him early and get into his head a bit. I'm going to do something I've never done here on this unique occasion, and sort of do an in-game post. updating this post every time I feel I have something to add. So go Giants, and be sure to check back throughout the game, and after, to vent or whatever! As long as Matt Cain keeps rolling, and the Giants keep coming up with those clutch 2-out hits, we should be OK. Texas has that high-powered offense that can score in a hurry, as we saw last night, so the Giants cannot let down and have to t...

Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get ...
