Surviving Without Melky

The Giants ran into a double-dose of bad luck Wednesday as the news of Melky Cabrera's suspension came down just before the Giants lost their series with Washington.

Melky Suspended for Season
Melky Cabrera, who was quickly becoming huge fan favorite around the Bay Area, just gave Giants fans a sucker punch to the gut. The '12 All-Star MVP was suspended the mandatory 50-games for violating the MLB drug policy by taking a Testosterone-based supplement. Once again the Giants are left shorthanded and without one of their lineup's cornerstones. Whether it's been suspensions like with Mota and Cabrera season, or injuries like with Wilson and Pablo Sandoval, the Giants just couldn't seem to get their A-team out on the field all together this season. They had the one game with Pence, Panda, Cabrera and Posey all in the lineup together and the offense looked completely rejuvinated. Turn the page to Wednesday's game, and you saw a 180-degree turnaround. And just like that, the "Melkman" honeymoon comes to an end with the 28 year-old leading baseball in hits with a .350 average and 84 runs scored. If the Giants do reach the postseason, he'd be eligible to play in a potential NLCS and World Series, but getting there just became a much tougher trek.

So, what do the Giants do now? I'll tell you what, it's really a good thing they did swing that deal for Pence before the deadline or else this would have been an even bigger blow. Bochy used Gregor Blanco out in left field in Wednesday's game, but mostly because he had a short bench and got the news about Melky less than 2 hours before first pitch. Blanco has been struggling terribly over the last 6 weeks and I don't think he'll be the answer. My guess is that either Brett Pill or Justin Christian will be back with the team by Friday, but San Francisco did pick up Xavier Nady a few weeks back, and they could ultimately look to him to pick up some of the slack that Cabrera leaves behind. There are still 2 weeks left before the waiver deadline too, and Sabean is likely to hike up efforts on that front, but he said before Tuesday nights game that the waiver wire stuff was extremely quiet right now. He added Cody Ross under similar circumstances in 2010. It wouldn't even surprise me if Sabes looked into a guy like Johnny Damon, who was just released by Cleveland.

It just sucks this came down when it did, being right in the thick of the pennant race and all. I have definitely lost some respect for Melky and do wonder how much of his production has been a byproduct of the PED use, but I'd still take him back under the right circumstances. He obviously just lost out on a lot of money, and it's a good thing the Giants put extension talks on hold when they did cause now they may have a shot at getting him on that bargain 3-year deal they were pitching to him. That is, if they still want him. We'll have to see how the rest of the season goes though. I'm still a little shocked by all this, but the Giants do have enough talent to pull out of it. They'll need Timmy to be a lot better than he was Wednesday, and everyone else in the lineup will have to step it up a notch, but I still have playoff expectations for this team.

I wonder if the Giants backed off the contract talks with Melkman because they knew this was coming.

Please no Damon. We need another outfielder but no more 40 year old washups please, Sabean.

How about putting belt in left field and moving Sandoval to first? Then Scutaro could play third and theriot could play second.

Blanco is not the answer.

Isaiah- I wouldn't be surprised at all if we see Bochy use that set-up on occasion. The thing is, the Giants want to keep Belt at first, he's a great defender and his bat is starting to come around.

-Ankiel is still a free agent. He and Damon were putting up similar numbers. I wouldn't be opposed to picking him up if there aren't any better options. They certainly need the outfield help and it won't cost them much $$ at all.

Lincecum looks terrible this season. slow fastballs and terrible control. SMH!!!

Losing Melky sure is a punch in the boiler, but I think that if Lincecum does not come around, and he had another shaky outing against the Nats, this team may not even take the division. The Giants still live and die with pitching, but with a weakened bullpen with no closer, and a poor record and performances from Lincecum, this may be the real downfall of the season. Can't really blame Zito, because most people would be happy with his 9 up and 8 down record at this point of the year. Giants will live or die with Lincecum.
It is impressive the one player like Melky can do something like that. The worth part of it. It is that it affects the whole team.

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. He wasn't able to stay on the field full time to help this club with their run at the NL Wild Card, and even when he was in there, he didn't seem to make much of an impact in th e lineup. Now, I wasn't necessarily hoping the Giants would cut ties with Sanchez (they probably would have had to pay 4 million or so to buy him out), just didn't think he was worth upwards of 10 million dollars, and would have liked to see the Giants pursue someone like Orlando Hudson with that money. The Giants already have an infielder who's being paid about 3-4 times what his play over the last 2 seasons would indi...

WORLD SERIES: Giants Move Up 2-0 on Texas

PreGame After taking game one in a surprising slug-fest , the Giants look to go up 2-0 on the Rangers in the World Series on Thursday night. The Giants are sending out Matt Cain, a guy who I'm sure every Giants' fan is pretty confident in. He'll be a opposed by C.J. Wilson, who's in his first year as a full-time starter, but has been brilliant in the role. He did struggle his last time out though, so hopefully the Giants can get to him early and get into his head a bit. I'm going to do something I've never done here on this unique occasion, and sort of do an in-game post. updating this post every time I feel I have something to add. So go Giants, and be sure to check back throughout the game, and after, to vent or whatever! As long as Matt Cain keeps rolling, and the Giants keep coming up with those clutch 2-out hits, we should be OK. Texas has that high-powered offense that can score in a hurry, as we saw last night, so the Giants cannot let down and have to t...

Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get ...
