Lincecum Mediocre in Final Tune-Up

Although these last 6 games haven't meant a whole lot since the team clinched last weekend, one of the issues the Giants are still figuring out is what exactly will be their playoff rotation.

The guy who's been penciled in to start game two of the NLDS may not have the stronghold on that spot after his last two outings. The great success that Tim Lincecum was having throughout most of the second half of the season has sort of disappeared over his last two starts, as he was rocked by Arizona in San Francisco in the final home series of the regular season, then got lit up by the Padres at Petco Park on Sunday. Timmy actually didn't throw too badly in his latest start, but he did make a few mistakes that Padres' hitters did not miss. Lincecum allowed just 7 base-runners in 6 innings of work, but he gave up three long-balls. It wasn't as bad as his last outing in San Francisco, but it likely wasn't exactly how 'The Freak' wanted to go into the postseason. Bruce Bochy did make one thing clear before the game regarding Timmy and the playoffs, stating that Hector Sanchez will catch the right-hander throughout. That means Buster Posey will see some time at first base and Brandon Belt will shift out to left on those nights, which we've been seeing more of the last two weeks. The rotation still hasn't been set in stone yet by Bochy, but it's widely believed to go Cain-Lincecum-Bumgarner-Vogelsong with Zito waiting in the wings.

Although the Giants got down early to San Diego, and went into the 8th inning trailing by 3 runs, they put up a solid comeback effort in the final two frames to take the series Sunday. Brandon Belt got the big hit in the 8th, a broken bat knock to right that drove in Francisco Peguero, but it was Hunter Pence and Xavier Nady who came up with the two big hits in the 9th to decide the ballgame. Nady hit a solo shot of Houston Street to tie the game at 5, then Hunter Pence, who's been an RBI machine lately, collected his 103rd and 104th RBI's of the season with a two-run blast just a couple batters later (his 2nd in as many days). For Nady, it was his first big fly since joining the Giants as he's quietly put up some respectable numbers in limited opportunity. After the big fly, Nady's now hitting .283 with 1 HR and 7 RBI in 41 at-bats with the Orange and Black. His OBP is also a rock-solid .379 and he's making a strong case to be more than just a platoon mate for Blanco in left. Bochy has already said he's not going to do much of any changing to the lineup when the playoffs start, so it'll be Blanco in left vs. right-handers (except for Lincecum starts), but if he starts slowly, we could see a lot more of Nady... And if your going to be wagering on the upcoming MLB postseason, visit players rewards card!

Now the Giants head into LA for their final tune-up before they meet the Reds in round one, and the two things I'll be watching the closest will be how these last starts go for Vogelsong and Zito. It's hard to imagine a situation where Vogelsong is ousted from the playoff rotation, especially after he's turned it back on in his last few outings, but the Giants record in Zito starts has been better than any other starter in the 2nd half. It should be interesting to see how these two finish up. I'm also curious to see how much Buster Posey will be used in this final series. As of now, he's got the the NL batting crown in his back pocket, so it wouldn't surprise me to see him catch Vogey and take the rest of the series off.

I would almost have rather Zito in the rotation than Lincecum but Bochy/Sabean would never do that. Lincecum is in the same position Huff was in; Bochy won't take him out because of his past accomplishments.

When it comes down to it, it's all about winning. The Giants win with Zito and don't with Lincecum.

What about starting Belt in left the whole series (even against right-handers) and putting Posey at first and Sanchez at catcher? I'd rather have Sanchez in the lineup than Blanco.

Posey's been catching these pitchers all year long. If Zito gets a start, we'd likely see Sanchez catch him too.

Also, Belt is serviceable in left field, but the difference between he and Blanco defensively out there is large.

Again, Bochy hasn't really done much changing to this starting lineup since Melky went out, and I doubt he starts tinkering in the playoffs.

I don't trust Lincecum in the playoffs at all. I'd seriously rather see Zito!

I hate to say this, but I would feel more confident if Vogelsong and Zito were the 3 and 4 starters instead of Lincecum. He just gave up 3 home runs to the Padres at Petco park, how in the world is he going to keep the ball in the little bandbox that is the Red's home park throwing 88 mph fastballs? The fact that he is even on the playoff roster is mostly because of his past performances, but he is a very mediocre pitcher right now and he will not suddenly turn into the 2010 Lincecum right before the playoffs start. It is foolish to think that he can be relied upon in a crucial game that is the base ball playoffs. His record this year says it all.

WORLD SERIES: Giants Move Up 2-0 on Texas

PreGame After taking game one in a surprising slug-fest , the Giants look to go up 2-0 on the Rangers in the World Series on Thursday night. The Giants are sending out Matt Cain, a guy who I'm sure every Giants' fan is pretty confident in. He'll be a opposed by C.J. Wilson, who's in his first year as a full-time starter, but has been brilliant in the role. He did struggle his last time out though, so hopefully the Giants can get to him early and get into his head a bit. I'm going to do something I've never done here on this unique occasion, and sort of do an in-game post. updating this post every time I feel I have something to add. So go Giants, and be sure to check back throughout the game, and after, to vent or whatever! As long as Matt Cain keeps rolling, and the Giants keep coming up with those clutch 2-out hits, we should be OK. Texas has that high-powered offense that can score in a hurry, as we saw last night, so the Giants cannot let down and have to t

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. He wasn't able to stay on the field full time to help this club with their run at the NL Wild Card, and even when he was in there, he didn't seem to make much of an impact in th e lineup. Now, I wasn't necessarily hoping the Giants would cut ties with Sanchez (they probably would have had to pay 4 million or so to buy him out), just didn't think he was worth upwards of 10 million dollars, and would have liked to see the Giants pursue someone like Orlando Hudson with that money. The Giants already have an infielder who's being paid about 3-4 times what his play over the last 2 seasons would indi

Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get
