Giants a darkhorse in SP market?

I'm sure you take a look at the Giants front-three in their rotation alone and think they're set. Two all-stars in Bum in Cueto then a strong #3 in "The Shark". With those three setting the tone for a deep lineup and strong defense, you'd almost think the Giants are ready for the stretch drive as is. Well, think again!

While the Giants' front-three starters are solid, they still don't have the most ideal pitching staff come postseason where they'll really need four reliable starters (I know we're getting ahead of ourselves here but anyway...). Now, they do have three startable arms in Cueto, Bumgarner and Samardzija, but after that it's a little unclear what Bochy would do in the fourth spot. Matt Cain is currently rehabbing with the River Cats and is coming off an extremely tough outing numbers-wise, but his velocity was there and he says he' feels like he's ready to rejoin the Giants rotation. He's the real question mark at this point as Jake Peavy has really turned things around on his end and has completely locked down that fifth spot, If he continues to improve like he has since early May down the stretch then he very well may be that fourth starter in the playoffs, but I still think the Giants will keep their options open. They're really gonna want to see Cainer throw at the big league level before the deadline if possible which, again, should be the case in the next week or so, before making any decisions regarding the staff, but I still think another starter would be a helluva smart move if they have the rescources and find a reasonable deal.

I mean, there are going to be more and more names tossed abuot over the next couple weeks but the guy I'd really like to get into the Giants rotation if at any way possible is Julio Teheran. I've mentioned the young Braves right-hander here a few different times this season as he's been one of my favorite arms in the NL and knows how to use a spacious ballpark to his advantage. Plus, he's pitching for a mediocre defensive squad and one of the worst hitting teams in all of baseball so he'd probably get an immediate boost mentally just by coming over to an elite team like the Giants. A couple other guys out there who could give that Giants that insurance starter without them having to break the bank could be Oakland's Rich Hill, Chi Sox lefty Jose Quintana, Milwaukee's Jimmy Nelson and Philly's right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, just to name a few.

Of course, their search for help won't just stop in the rotation. As a matter of fact, they're gonna also be looking into relief help which, luckily for them, tend to be the easiest to obtain this time of year due to the sheer volume of options. Still, they need quality here, so they probably have just a small handful of guys they are strongly considering. I've always been a strong Andrew Miller advocate as the Giants need that lights-out left-handed late man and also a guy who can take over for Santaigo Casilla when he runs into his occasional hiccups. Whether its Miller or someone else though, they need another proven lefty and I'd like to see them get another proven right-hander too just to take some pressure off of Romo. Strickland's close but I just don't fully trust him in the 8th inning of a 1-run game with a runner on and facing a guy like a Kris Bryant or Nolan Arrenado in some intensely crucial game down the stretch in September (due to his history of surrendering the big home run late in games).

Other than a reliable late man or two, and then possibly another capable starter who could push/replace Peavy or Cain, I think the Giants are pretty well armed for the stretch drive. I mean, with guys in their system popping up left and right and legitimately contributing, they aren't at all having their hand forced in terms of needing to make a deal. From Grant Green, Ramiro Pena and Ruben Tejada to Albert Suarez and closer-in-the-making, Derek Law. These guys are probably guys (outside of maybe Law if you follow the minor league system closely) who many fans may not have heard of and/or expected much out of but each have played roles in Giants' victories while guys like Joe Panik, Matt Duffy and Sergio Romo have been sidelined. Mac Williamson and Jarrett Parker have each made the impact of Hunter Pence's DL stint tolerable and alleviated the need for outside help which has been huge. I know you hear it all the time and it's somewhat cliche, but It really has been a collective effort from guys not only on the ML roster but the minor leagues as well coming up and contributing in any possible way! It really has been fun to watch.

Injury Updates: Hunter Pence was forced from his rehab game on Saturday, which is a bit worrisome, although the Giants are playing it off as no big deal at the moment. Pence re-aggravated the right hamstring in a AAA rehab game with Sacramento and will be held out until further inspection. Hopefully it's all precautionary and Pence is back on track for a pre-August return, but hammy's can be tricky and Hunter is about as "balls-to-the-wall" as they come which means it's tough for him to turn it down a notch in recovery, but he's gotta be smart here and ensure he's 100% for the final 2 months.

As far as Joe Panik's situation, the news is a little more clear as he's been cleared to get back on field after passing the concussion protocols and the Giants expect him back with the team by next weekend. Matt Duffy's situation is a bit more cloudy though as Bochy does not have a timetable for him to resume baseball activity and in two weeks if they still don't have a timetable they could be looking to obtain a third basemen as well... Needless to say, it's going to be an interesting few weeks leading up to August 1st non waiver-deadline and I expect the Giants to pull off at least one deal for a relief pitcher.

Ok, if the Giants could get Teheran from ATL (i'd give up Beede for sure) and their dominant young closer that Vizcaino (sp?) guy who throws nasty fastballs and sliders, I think the Giants would be about set. THeir offense is so good no matter hwo they put out there they keep being able to win. Shit they basically have half a aaa lineup out there a lot with Pena, Mac, Parker, Tejada and these guys are straight gettin it done. I say just juice up the bullpen and rotation and give it a run!

Can't wait for these next two monts of baseball then we got out niniers right around the corner too. Good times good times. Hope like hell we get a couple good arms though.

Lets Go Giants!

Man look at the rotation and pen if they did that:

Bum
Cueto
Teheran
Samardizja
Peavy/Cain

Kontos
Lopez
Strickland
Romo
Law
Casilla
Vizcaino

That's pretty damn tough, straight up. With casilla romo and viz, nobody will be able to touch us past the 6th inning and that rotation will be nails. Pitching wins in postseason we all know that! Get it done Mr. Bobby Evans sir!

I think you have the right idea as far as what they will be targeting over the next couple of weeks. I would be surprised if they didn't grab someone at least to deepen their bullpen before the deadline, but I don't think they need to make any big splashy move like they did when they got Pence in 2012 (which was their last really big-time deadline deal). I'd expect them to make a deal more along the lines of the one they made for Peavy in 2014, who was instrumental during that championship run.

I keep hearing reliever is the number one target and likely the most obtainable but I would be a little surprised if they didn't add another guy capable of taking the ball every fifth day. With Peavy and Cain's uncertainty down the stretch it would be mighty re-assuring to have a guy who can make that 4th start in a playoff series should Cain and Peavy not be up to the task. There should be quite a few of those types too. I don't wanna keep typing for ever in this comments section as we do have a post coming up previewing the 5 most conceivable targets that the Giants should be looking into and should have a realistic chance at getting. The two most intriguing names I will throw out there though as far as the starters are concerned are Sonny Gray and Julio Teheran. Because both are around 25 years of age I'd consider giving up a package consisting of one of the Giants prized young arms like Phil Bickford, Adalberto Meijia or Tyler Beede. It would cost more than just one of those arms though I don't even know how available those two are and I don't know if the Giants feel their need for a starter is strong enough to warrant giving up 2+ top-10 prospects.

Again, more to come in our next post, but I wouldn't expect anything too earth shattering as far as the Giants moves this summer.
Andrew Miller or Chapman make most sense cuz they can close or they can come in in the 8th inning to get a tough lefty if they have to. Javy used to be able to do that but I think he's pretty much washed up at this point. So yea, reliever prefarbly left-hander would be the biggest need IMO. I hear CHapman has some character issues though so not sure if he's a guy we'd want to mess up our chemistry.

The Giants can add another strong SP - but need more help in the bullpen. It all depends on the price.

I agree with Trevor, we are long past the days of depending on Cain or Peavy giving a quality start, one out of five doesn't cut it if you want to win it all! Anyone else bugged by the comments from Peavy that he wants/thinks he can pitch another 2-3yrs in this league? I think he is deluded and that makes him dangerous..

why does everyone mention releiver but not starter? Did we not all see how Cain got rocked yesterday? Do they really trust Cain and Peavy in the playoffs cuz I don't. They should at least try to get Hellickson from Phills or Sonny Gray from the A's. They can get a releiver in August if they need to. Thats my 2 cents.

I can't beleive that we can't find a better option as a 4th guy for a playoff series than Peavy/Cain. I mean those guys are the only reason why the Giants aren't like 30 games over .500 IMO. BUt yes, bullpen is an issue. They need a left-hander who can get people out like Javy Lopez did pre-2015. And they could really use another late right-hander who can put some scare into you. Romo is nice but doesn't overpower you and Casilla is too inconsitent so is Strickland. Maybe law is the answer but they have to get another guy there.

So the way I see it, they need 2 relievers, 1 starter, and depending on Duffy and Panik's situations over the next week, they may very well need to go get another infielder. Pena has been a huge shot in the arm but do we really expect the guy to hit .350 the rest of the way cuz i don't. At least pence is coming back healthy and the Giants outfield has depth and doesn't need any help at all.

Eddie-

I'm sure they can find another starter but they feel their need is releif right now and that is their number one need. I agree with you they ideally could use another capable starter but I think Bochy has confidence in using Peavy in a playoff game if need be. That being said, if he tanks down the stretch and Cain doesn't improve on his return game the other day in Boston then yes, they may find themselves seeking out a back-end starter in August. I just don't think they'll get one before non-waiver deadline though as price will be too high for guys that really aren't much better options than Peavy... I mean do you really want a like Andrew Cashner who may have slightly better numbers than Peavy but will cost you 2 decent prospects? If they could get a guy like Sonny Gray who could help them now and into the future that could make some sense but I think this team is putting all it's chips in the relief help search for the next week.

We never know though, they could get some crazy package deal where they bring in both a starer and reliever but again, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Anyway, we'll be putting posting a lot more about this in today's post after the game, so stay tuned...

I say Giants go all out and get Chapman and Tanaka from Yankeees. Give up Tyler Beede and Beckford and whoever. THe Giants time is now. They have a window of about 4-5 more years with the core of the team in primes of their career andcc they can really win another 3-4 rings with Posey and Madbum, pence, BElt, Crawford, Cueto, Panik Duffy etc.. I mean these guys aint goin nowhere anytime soon and a lot of them like Belt, Duffy, Panik and Crawford are all just getting better.

I know you need to keep some guys in your minor leagues though but this team is obviously special and can win another tittle and they need to go all out forike this it. C'Mon how could you now like this lineup

MadBum-Cueto-Tanaka-Shark-Peavy

Chapman-Romo-Casilla-Strickland-Lopez-Kontos-Cain

YES PLEASE!!! C'MON BOBBY EVANS GET IT DONE!!!!!!

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. He wasn't able to stay on the field full time to help this club with their run at the NL Wild Card, and even when he was in there, he didn't seem to make much of an impact in th e lineup. Now, I wasn't necessarily hoping the Giants would cut ties with Sanchez (they probably would have had to pay 4 million or so to buy him out), just didn't think he was worth upwards of 10 million dollars, and would have liked to see the Giants pursue someone like Orlando Hudson with that money. The Giants already have an infielder who's being paid about 3-4 times what his play over the last 2 seasons would indi...

WORLD SERIES: Giants Move Up 2-0 on Texas

PreGame After taking game one in a surprising slug-fest , the Giants look to go up 2-0 on the Rangers in the World Series on Thursday night. The Giants are sending out Matt Cain, a guy who I'm sure every Giants' fan is pretty confident in. He'll be a opposed by C.J. Wilson, who's in his first year as a full-time starter, but has been brilliant in the role. He did struggle his last time out though, so hopefully the Giants can get to him early and get into his head a bit. I'm going to do something I've never done here on this unique occasion, and sort of do an in-game post. updating this post every time I feel I have something to add. So go Giants, and be sure to check back throughout the game, and after, to vent or whatever! As long as Matt Cain keeps rolling, and the Giants keep coming up with those clutch 2-out hits, we should be OK. Texas has that high-powered offense that can score in a hurry, as we saw last night, so the Giants cannot let down and have to t...

Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get ...
