SF still assessing options in rotation, outfield after Wood signing

Even with the signing of Alex Wood last week, the Giants continue to navigate this free agency through a slow and methodical approach. None of their additions this winter have been huge signings or names that necessarily jump out at you, but if all goes well, they could be some of the biggest bargains of the winter.

Wood's one-year, $3 million guarantee, plus incentives, could line up to be one of the biggest steals on the free agent pitching market if he makes it through 2021 healthy. Just compare this deal to the one the Braves just gave Drew Smyly. Yes, Smyly was more effective in 2020, but if both guys are healthy, I'd take Wood out of the two for sure. And then you see that the Braves gave Smyly $11M guaranteed for essentially 7 pretty good outings for the Giants in '20 and Wood's $3M guaranteed for a terrific postseason with the Dodgers looks even better. Wood is a year younger, has a better career track record than Smyly and it's not like Smyly has been much healthier than Wood in recent seasons. He just happened to have the better 2020.

If your worried about the injuries/ineffectiveness that plagued him throughout the 2019-20 seasons, he did his best to alleviate that concern by throwing very well last postseason for the Dodgers. That included 2 perfect innings vs. the Rays in the decisive game 6 series clinching victory. It reminds me, granted on a much smaller scale, of how Gausman looked terrific out of the bullpen for the Reds at the end of the '19 season before the Giants signed him. We all saw how well that turned out for them last summer. I'm not saying Wood is the next Gausman, but he's got the ability to be that good, and if worse comes to worst, you slide him into the bullpen and take him the Drew Pomeranz route.

I do really like this signing. And one way or another, I think it will look very good for them by the end of the season.

Now, on to the next order of business. With Wood and DeSclafini in tow, the rotation isn't in as much need as it was coming into the offseason but it could still use some depth for sure. They have five starters they can pencil in to start the season, but there are question marks that surround almost all five of those guys, so adding another veteran (or even two) to come in and compete would make a lot of sense.

We've seen them linked to Cole Hamels, Julio Teheran, Anibal Sanchez and most recently, Jake Odorizzi. Of that group, Teheran and Odorizzi, I think, would offer the most potential upside. Teheran was terrible in has transition to the AL last summer with the Angels, but again, it was such a wacky year that I'm willing to give players with strong track records a second chance and Teheran fits that bill. Odorizzi would probably have been one of the top free-agent arms of this class had he not ran into injuries last year, so you can obviously see the draw there. Hamels has always been a very good pitcher when he's healthy, even as he enters his later 30's, but the injury and missed 2020 definitely raises a red flag.

They've also apparently been zeroing in on outfielders, with two in particular at the top of their list at the moment. On Sunday, Susan Slusser reported that they've kicked the tires on Jackie Bradley Jr. and Eddie Rosario, either of which I'd take on this team in a second. It really just depends on what the Giants are focusing more on this season as both these guys bring some different skills to the table. Bradley is a great defender, who could handle center field here every day, no problem. His bat could go either way through. Rosario, on the other hand, is about as sure fire as it comes from the left side in terms of run production. The guy has 30+ home run power and is a very competent run producer, even if he's not getting on base a ton.

In this day and age, I would lean toward the sure fire offense Rosario would bring. He can play all three outfield positions, including center field, adequately, but I think that if the Giants brought him in we'd be seeing a ton of Yaz in center being flanked by Dickerson and Rosario on the corners. He'd immediately become the favorite to lead the team in HR and RBI and that right there would make him the more attractive option of the two.

The Giants are absolutely going to have to hit to keep up with the Dodgers and Padres in 2021 and while their offense looked much better than we all expected last season, they need to prove that wasn't a two-month mirage. Rosario, and even to a lesser extent JBJ, would both help in that respect, so I'm all for it. Aside from being the better fit offensively, I also feel Rosario would be inclined to take that one-year, prove it deal after not being tendered a deal with the Twins. JBJ could get a multi-year deal based on his ability to anchor center field, but it's really any ones guess as to how this market plays out down the stretch.

Another big bat would be awesome, but their primary objective should be to make sure they have more pitching depth than they had during last year's 60-game schedule. Imagine if they had to get through another 100 games with that same bunch?

They certainly have some more work to do, and they know that. And with spring training reporting on the horizon, I'm expecting the whole league to be much more active over the next 30 days.

Cole Hammels would probably take a one year deal so I could definitely see that one happening. What about Joc Peterson as the big left handed hitter they're looking at? Can play center and really rakes right handed pitching? Plus has the ties to Farhan from the Dodgers organization? Seems like it could make some sense, but who knows it will probably be guys nobody is really discussing lol. Who woulda thought Deslafini and wiseler? Could both be good additions but i don't think anyone was expecting them.

Tough to see both Rosario and Peterson take 1 year deals for less than 10 million each and it not be the Giants. I wonder what Giants offer was (or even IF they offered). Also wonder if either of them took less to go to those other teams. Stuff like this doesn't always come out, but I'm curious none the less. I'd definitely like to see Odorizzi get a 2 year deal in SF. At this point I'd be happy to get Jackie Bradley Jr too. Makes the most sense as he has CF skills and is left hand batting. I'd also like to see them throw one of those 1yr 8-10miL deals at Rosenthal or Colome to come in and close. Hand, Yates, Holland all took 1yr deals as closers.

Of course it just be super NuTz if Giants threw out 2 year 60miL deals for both Bauer and Ozuna.....yeah I know, super reaching!

Yeah, at this point it's looking like the return of the DH in the NL for at least '21 could be in store. Even so, I don't think the Giants would risk going too long for Ozuna. I think they want as much money as possible to play with next winter.

I would take Baeur in an instant. Fun guy to watch, good personality that would probably fit in great in this city, plus he looks like one of those guys who's just getting better with time, even though he's now 30.

I too am surprised they couldn't match or exceed the offers for either Pederson or Rosario. I really liked the potential of Rosario especially on this team. Pederson doesn't quite offer the offensive upside that Rosario does, although he does have just as much power. I think Bradley is pretty much there last option for the outfield unless they want to go into the next tiere and look at guys like Brian Goodwin, Brett Gardner or Nomar Mazara. Goodwin 2 years ago would have made some sense. Mazara is still very young and has huge power potential but doesn't really have a position and was pretty dreadful last summer.

We'll see, I definitely could see them grabbing a couple last second bargains, but the options, especially in the outfield, are diminishing pretty quickly.

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. He wasn't able to stay on the field full time to help this club with their run at the NL Wild Card, and even when he was in there, he didn't seem to make much of an impact in th e lineup. Now, I wasn't necessarily hoping the Giants would cut ties with Sanchez (they probably would have had to pay 4 million or so to buy him out), just didn't think he was worth upwards of 10 million dollars, and would have liked to see the Giants pursue someone like Orlando Hudson with that money. The Giants already have an infielder who's being paid about 3-4 times what his play over the last 2 seasons would indi...

WORLD SERIES: Giants Move Up 2-0 on Texas

PreGame After taking game one in a surprising slug-fest , the Giants look to go up 2-0 on the Rangers in the World Series on Thursday night. The Giants are sending out Matt Cain, a guy who I'm sure every Giants' fan is pretty confident in. He'll be a opposed by C.J. Wilson, who's in his first year as a full-time starter, but has been brilliant in the role. He did struggle his last time out though, so hopefully the Giants can get to him early and get into his head a bit. I'm going to do something I've never done here on this unique occasion, and sort of do an in-game post. updating this post every time I feel I have something to add. So go Giants, and be sure to check back throughout the game, and after, to vent or whatever! As long as Matt Cain keeps rolling, and the Giants keep coming up with those clutch 2-out hits, we should be OK. Texas has that high-powered offense that can score in a hurry, as we saw last night, so the Giants cannot let down and have to t...

Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get ...
