Giants Beat LA

The Giants did their part to help keep the Dodgers reeling by taking 2 of 3 over the weekend at AT&T Park. Sure, a Giants-Dodgers series' in September is a lot more interesting when both teams are fighting for something but this weekends series was entertaining nonetheless. The Giants won both Friday night's and Sunday's game with late inning heroics, 2 wins that push the fading Dodgers even further behind in the NL Wild Card race. The hero on Friday was Daniel Ortmeier as he untied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a shot to the deepest part of the ballpark of one of the better relievers in the league. Ortmeier has been getting a lot of time at first base recently and is performing better with the more consistent playing time. Sunday's game winner came off the bat of the struggling Ray Durham. Ray Durham came off the bench in the 8th inning to hit a go-ahead 3-run home run that gave the Giants a lead they didn't surrender. Durham had to feel some relief after that blast as he has struggled through his worst season of his career has been the biggest disappointment of the season as far as the Giants offense goes. Durham was supposed to be the man behind Bonds this season but his .216 average and .343 slugging percentage aren't quite what you look for in the middle of the order.

In a year with so many inconsistencies, the starting pitching and defense have been good enough to have this team fighting for a playoff spot. The Giants again received quality starting pitching this weekend as well as some nice defensive plays to help them take the series from LA. Rajai Davis had the web gem of the weekend Sunday in the ninth by saving extra bases with an amazing catch. Jonathon Sanchez had his best start of the year and maybe his career on Friday night by pitching a career-high 7 innings and keeping the Dodgers in check without walking anybody. The no walks really stuck out because Sanchez has always had issues with consistency in his delivery and release point, but to go 7 without walking a batter has to give Bruce Bochy and Dave Righetti some confidence. It was also nice to see Cain rebound nicely after a shortest outing of the year in Colorado last week. He looks like he has jumped back on the track that he was on in August in which he went 4-1 with a 2.18 era.

The pitching staff for LA won't be so woeful next year with a full season of Loiaza and Schmidt to go with Penny and Billingsly I think it has a lot of promise. Colletti also needs to go reload with Free Agents to fill in for the vets who aren't pulling weight, (furcal, martin, loney, kemp, either, pierre) leaves only 2nd and 3rd base with question marks. Those question marks need to bring much more to the plate next year otherwise the Dodgers will be medicore again. good article

Colletti has made some bad decisions since he's taken over. He's lucky he inherited what he did.

Sanchez looked good, so has Corriea.

Colleti shouldn't keep overpaying mediocre free agents. He messed up with Pierre and Nomar in my opinion, not to mention the biggest screw up on his part, Jason Schmidt.

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. He wasn't able to stay on the field full time to help this club with their run at the NL Wild Card, and even when he was in there, he didn't seem to make much of an impact in th e lineup. Now, I wasn't necessarily hoping the Giants would cut ties with Sanchez (they probably would have had to pay 4 million or so to buy him out), just didn't think he was worth upwards of 10 million dollars, and would have liked to see the Giants pursue someone like Orlando Hudson with that money. The Giants already have an infielder who's being paid about 3-4 times what his play over the last 2 seasons would indi...

WORLD SERIES: Giants Move Up 2-0 on Texas

PreGame After taking game one in a surprising slug-fest , the Giants look to go up 2-0 on the Rangers in the World Series on Thursday night. The Giants are sending out Matt Cain, a guy who I'm sure every Giants' fan is pretty confident in. He'll be a opposed by C.J. Wilson, who's in his first year as a full-time starter, but has been brilliant in the role. He did struggle his last time out though, so hopefully the Giants can get to him early and get into his head a bit. I'm going to do something I've never done here on this unique occasion, and sort of do an in-game post. updating this post every time I feel I have something to add. So go Giants, and be sure to check back throughout the game, and after, to vent or whatever! As long as Matt Cain keeps rolling, and the Giants keep coming up with those clutch 2-out hits, we should be OK. Texas has that high-powered offense that can score in a hurry, as we saw last night, so the Giants cannot let down and have to t...

Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get ...
