Rockies Sweep SF, Take Back 1st Place

It started off with one of Tim Lincecum's wildest starts of his big league career, and little help from the bullpen, in an ugly 7-4 loss, dropping his record to 3-4. Game 2 started out well, but finished up in very much the same fashion, as the Giants dropped both games of the 2-game set to Colorado, and their possession of first place in the NL West.

You could tell early on in Monday night's game that it was going to be an interesting one. Tim Lincecum was all over the place early, walking guys, and getting tattooed like Lincecum rarely does when he did come into the zone, just because he was always behind in the count. He walked 6 guys and threw a ball into center field when trying to turn a double play. He allowed 9 hits (2 HR, albeit 1 one was F9 anywhere else) while not even making it out of the 6th inning. It was an outing you'll rarely see the 27 year-old right hander make, and It'll occupy his mind until he laces them up next this week in LA. And it was finally a game in which you really couldn't blame the offense. Although they came up with a few big hits, Nate Schierholtz's 3-run blast to right along with Andres Torres solo job to dead center, you expect 4 runs to be enough for your ace to work with, but the Rockies rallied, as they so often do, in their home ballpark for the late inning victory. Speaking of Torres, that guy has been a godsend since returning from the DL, and hopefully he's just what they need to help kick-start the sputtering offense.

Game 2 started out a lot like game one did, with the Giants jumping out to an early lead, except for this time, Jonathan Sanchez was absolutely dealing (up until that 8th inning). Through the first 7, Sanchez allowed just 3 hits, 0 walks and 5 strikeouts, his one mistake being a solo home run to Troy Tulowitzki, but outside of that, he was the Jonathan Sanchez we all expect to see when he takes, tough to hit. But then the 8th inning rolls around and he ran into a little bit of trouble. He allowed 2 quick singles to Spilboroughs and Iannetta and I think right then and there is when his concentration drifted, cause the next batter laid down a bunt and Sanchez, trying to get the lead runner, threw the ball into center field, which ended up opening the flood gates in a 4-run Rockie inning. I know it's hindsight now and I was only just thinking about it at the time, but after the 2 quick singles in the 8th, I began to think that was it for Sanchez. Problem is, the Giants had nobody ready in the bullpen yet, and Boch couldn't make a move right then and there. The only lefty who Boch has any kind of confidence in right now out of the pen is Javier Lopez, and he's been getting a lot of work. He had to get the call, and he wasn't himself either, allowing a few hits and a run.

On Deck: So now the Giants are down a game to the Rockies in the standings, and it's only mid-May, so it really means nothing in the long scheme of things, but there are some issues I'm a little worried about as the team heads to LA for Part. 2 of their mid-week mini-series. First off, the LH bullpen situation is starting to become a problem. Santiago Cassilla (albeit a righty) is close to being ready, and when he comes back, he has to take Dan Runzler's spot. Bochy should not be using the Lefty vs. Lefty as a priority, at least until the 7th or 8th inning of really close games, but you cannot over-work Lopez. They need to start looking at RH relievers who have success at getting lefties out, and use them vs. left-handed pitching when Lopez is out and Affeldt struggling. Again, another reason to bring Zito back in relief!

OK, time to make a trade. I really don't see anything changing drastically where the Giants Offense will all the sudden start scoring.

Maybe wait until Pablo comes back, but it just looks like the guys who came up big last year: Huff, Posey, SS poition, Ross etc.... are just not doing yet this year.

Sucks, Sanchez and Lince are both 3-4 and both have great era's.... The Giants offense blows, pardon my language.

I say time for Brandon Belt, Take 2. Huff needs to sit a while I think!

I like Boch's lineup for wednesday, just w/o Rowand in center.. If Torres was out there, that would be the A-lineup right now I think.

DeRosa's fragility makes me wonder if the Giants even made him take a physical before signing him last winter?

I'll have a post with much more than that on the situation, but the Giants continue to drop like flies!

Other than that, good to see them have some success in the 4th vs. Kershaw, just still waiting for that big multi-RBI hit.

Heck, DeRosa is having the worst luck in this world. Says he's finally healthy this week and is finally getting consistent time at thrid, then this happens.

I feel for the guy, and hope it's just a 15-day DL thing at worst.

Even in that case, who do they call up, Rohlinger? That guy stinks vs. big league pitching?

Can Belt Play third?

Don't know about Belt over at third, though I do know Huff has played at 3rd base more than any other position in his career, and Schierholtz was drafted as an infielder/3rd basemen I beleive.

But looking back at his fielding numbers at third, and you see why they moved Nate to right field.

Huff though, could be an interesting option should Belt keep terrorizing AAA pitching and until Panda comes back (which is looking like mid-late June).

Bochy needs to play the rookies right now. Why so short on the pitchers, but long on the geezers? get some hitting in there and we'll win more. Period.

De Rosa is done. Tejada is done. Burrel is done. Rowand is probably done. Huff might be, but not ready to give up on him yet. If Huff starts trying to hit to left, I'll feel better about him, and so will he.

Start Crawford and Belt both at short and 1st until they prove they CAN'T do it.

fontenot should be playing more until Panda returns, and let's hope Freddy doesn't get hurt, but Burris can do the job too. Get some sticks in the lineup that make the opposing pitchers at least think a little.

I love Bochy, but c'mon man!

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. He wasn't able to stay on the field full time to help this club with their run at the NL Wild Card, and even when he was in there, he didn't seem to make much of an impact in th e lineup. Now, I wasn't necessarily hoping the Giants would cut ties with Sanchez (they probably would have had to pay 4 million or so to buy him out), just didn't think he was worth upwards of 10 million dollars, and would have liked to see the Giants pursue someone like Orlando Hudson with that money. The Giants already have an infielder who's being paid about 3-4 times what his play over the last 2 seasons would indi...

WORLD SERIES: Giants Move Up 2-0 on Texas

PreGame After taking game one in a surprising slug-fest , the Giants look to go up 2-0 on the Rangers in the World Series on Thursday night. The Giants are sending out Matt Cain, a guy who I'm sure every Giants' fan is pretty confident in. He'll be a opposed by C.J. Wilson, who's in his first year as a full-time starter, but has been brilliant in the role. He did struggle his last time out though, so hopefully the Giants can get to him early and get into his head a bit. I'm going to do something I've never done here on this unique occasion, and sort of do an in-game post. updating this post every time I feel I have something to add. So go Giants, and be sure to check back throughout the game, and after, to vent or whatever! As long as Matt Cain keeps rolling, and the Giants keep coming up with those clutch 2-out hits, we should be OK. Texas has that high-powered offense that can score in a hurry, as we saw last night, so the Giants cannot let down and have to t...

Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get ...
