2007 Mock Lineup #1

As I said in my last post, I will be composing various mock lineups throughout the winter every couple of weeks or so. With it being so early in the off-season, it's very likely none of the additions I add to my list will be part of the team in '07, but you have to start somewhere.

Lineup:
1. CF Gary Mathews Jr.-( The Giants love Mathews and may overpay to get him in their outfield)
2. SS Omar Vizquel
3. 2B Ray Durham
4. LF Barry Bonds ( I can't picture him anywhere else now that Detroit and the Angels are out)
5. 3B Aubrey Huff ( 30 years old with 5 straight 20+ hr seasons, not much talk about Huff early)
6. 1B Wes Helms/Pat Burrell ( Burrell only if the Giants unload Benitez and even out the $)
7. RF Randy Winn
8. C Elizier Alfonzo (Sabean is not looking for starting catchers in the free agent market)

Rotation:
1. RHP Matt Cain
2. RHP Woody Williams (Bochy gets his "big game" pitcher to move north with him for a year)
3. RHP Matt Morris
4. LHP Noah Lowry
5. LHP Jonathon Sanchez

Bullpen:
CP Joe Borowski
LHP Mike Stanton
RHP David Weathers
RHP Kevin Corriea
RHP Brian Wilson
LHP Ray King
RHP Tim Worrell

Bench:
C Henry Blanco
IF Kevin Frandsen
IF Geoff Blum
OF Todd Linden
OF/1B Mark Sweeney

This team would probably cost about 10 million dollars more than the Giants want to spend, but they may be able to backload some contracts to make things work. The overall lineup would be younger, healthier and a little faster. The rotation would take a hit in losing Schmidt for Williams, but the bullpen would be improved drastically.

I like your thought process on this one but there are few reaches and a few things that you may want to reconsider.
1. I don't see them keeping Bonds AND Durham AND being able to sign Matthews Jr. (though a do think he would be a great addition to our team and Bochy managed him in S.D.)
2. There may be an outside chance that Tim Lincecum will be invited to Spring Training and he may have a leg up on Sanchez he would be moved back to the bullpen where he thrived
3. There is no way the Giants would be ignorant enough to pay Worrell for another year of being hurt/ineffective. Bullpen looks better and I like Borowski as closer although I'd question your thinking on Embree

Worell is under contract for another year. Embree is questionable, but there aren't many good LH relievers out there. As much as the Giants like Lincum, he'd need to be absolutly lights out in spring to make the od roster especially as a starter. I do think he'll see big league time in '07 but he will probably start the year in Fresno or Conecticut.

I still think they dump Worrell and make room for a younger, healthier reliever. You have a good point Lincecum but the Giants need starters and if he shows them something positive (Jamey Wright) out of spring training they may give him a shot. I think it would be wise to give him another year of seasoning as they did with Matt Cain before bringing him to the big leagues. What was Huff's average last year? I like the idea but I don't know if they'll let Pedro go.

I'm hearing that the Giants have made offers to Juan Pierre and Matthews Jr. What is the consensus opinion here? Who would you rather have as the starting opening day center fielder?

Apparantly there are offers on the table for both. I'd take Mathews over Pierre, but niether are worth 10 mill a year.

Giants Still Need Infield Help

On Saturday, the Giants finalized a 2 year contract extension with Freddy Sanchez, who they acquired in July for Tim Alderson. The new deal for Sanchez will pay him 12 million over the next 2 seasons instead of 8.5 million for just 2010, which was his option for 2010. I've voiced my disappointment in Sanchez a few times here since the Giants dealt for him over the summer. Giants Notes: Lincecum Signs, Ross to Boston

Well, even though I touched on it a little bit in our last post, I haven't really had a chance to get my thoughts out on the new Lincecum deal since he and the Giants agreed earlier in the week. Also, on the other end of things, the Giants missed out on shoring up their outfield by letting Cody Ross sign in Boston for only $3 million in 2012. First off, obviously, wanted to talk a bit about Lincecum. I've already said here that I didn't expect him to sign a long-term deal that takes him through free agency, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave San Francisco like everyone is suspecting. I mean, if I were Lincecum, I'd probably do the same thing, even if I planned on eventually signing with the Giants long-term. Why take a chance at mitigating your value to just sign a deal? Granted, a 5 year, $100 million deal isn't anything to sneeze at, in this market, if he were a free agent, Lincecum could probably easily command a 8 year, $200 million deal. If he could get ...

Still Not Scoring, But Winning

The Giants are 7-4, but they have one of the lowest ranking offenses in baseball. They are last in the league in home runs and rank near the bottom in all other major catagories. Randy Winn, Omar Vizquel and Moises Alou are carrying the offense right now with virtually no help from Barry Bonds, Ray Durham and Pedro Feliz. Bonds revealed last week that he is playing with bone chips in his left elbow, and the surgically repaired right knee is starting to act up a little bit. Barry's swing is still looking good and quick, but he's having trouble planting and driving the outside pitch, and that's where pitchers are working him. He is hitting below .200 and has yet to hit a jack, but I am still not ready to panic. I really believe Barry will go on the DL at some point in the first half, for rest if nothing else, but I do expect him to start heating up before he starts taking days off.
